Is It Painful?

deviantID

Eclectic little thing.
Dreamy and detached, likes romance and old fashioned things as well as fantasy/sci-fi.
Normal people are boring!

Questionnaire

Tue Sep 1, 2009, 12:42 PM
  • Listening to: Death Cab for Cutie
  • Reading: The Time Machine by H.G. Wells
  • Watching: The Maltese Falcon (1931)
  • Playing: Sailors' Eyes by Joel Plaskett on piano
  • Eating: Umeboshi candies.
  • Drinking: Water
How annoying are these things?
So fun.

01.] What is your pen name?
Shan

02.] What made you choose this name?
It was a sudden thing. I wanted a new identity, and that's how I achieved it. It's actually starting to swing the other way now- people are starting to call me by my full name again. Maybe I should switch to Shana? Ahah.

03.] Do you use PC or Mac?
Mac now.

04.] What programs do you use most often?
Garageband and Open Office.

05.] Do you use mouse, or tablet?
Tablet. Keyboard, hah.

06.] What color or color combinations do you find yourself using most often?
Mostly neutrals and naturals. I dislike neons.

07.] What part of a picture do you put most effort into?
Concept. Then shadowing.

08.] How long does it take you do draw a picture?
It depends on the picture. Usually a few hours, unless it gets colour. Then it can take up to a few days.

09.] Do you keep your rough drafts?
I used to. I've stopped doing that, now.

10.] What font do you use most often?
Times New Roman, I think?

11.] When you scan your image, what DPI do you use?
I haven't scanned anything in aeons.

12.] Do you do anything else when you're drawing?
I'll listen to music or Sam Spade audio dramas. Sometimes I listen to the TV, or sing, I talk to people on IMs. It varies.

13.] Approximately how many pictures do you draw in a month?
Not many anymore. It used to be hundreds, but now it's maybe four or five.

14.] What kind of paper do you draw your pictures on?
Cartridge paper, bristol, marker paper, sketchpads galore, all depending on the place, what I'm drawing, etc. etc..

15.] What kind of paper do you use for rough sketches and drafts?
Cartridge paper.

16.] How long does it take you to ink something?
An hour or so. But it depends on the detail- a single frame, non-sequential image can take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour and a half. A more detailed sequential page (i.e. a comic) can take a couple hours.

17.] Do you do comics, or fan comics?
Comics, yeah. Though I wish there were another name for them- they aren't very funny. Kind of violent, really...

18.] Do you like comics? Are they fun to make?
I do like comics, but I can't stand most North American art styles! It's really unfortunate. And the Japanese plots usually leave me bored.

19.] Have you ever submitted anything to a magazine?
I don't believe so.

20.] Did it get published?
My writing's been published, not my artwork.

21.] Who are your favorite artists?
Hayao Miyazaki, Jan van Svankmeyer, the Brothers Quay, I don't really know actually. I don't obsess over anyone's art. Maybe Vienna Teng, but that's a musical artist.

22.] Do you like anime/manga? If so, what are your favorite series?
I enjoy manga, and a few select anime. Mostle "Emma" (in English, "Victorian Romance Emma") and "Detective Conan". Haha, yes, I realize it's a childrens' manga. As far as anime, pretty much just Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei.

23.] Do you like cartoons/comics? If so, what are your favorite series?
I like Ruby Gloom. It's such a weird concept for a childrens' show. I read a few ebcomics- mostly Scarygoround and xkcd.

24.] Any artists that you wish you could draw like?
Not really. Just a better me.

25.] Do you read a lot of books?
Not so much anymore. I blame the computer.
No, seriously.
It's all the computer's fault.
If it weren't for the internet, I would be so well read.

26.] Did you ever buy a book to inspire or teach you to draw?
Yes. Well, and no. Others have bought them for me, or I've won them.

27.] Any video games you enjoy?
Final Fantasy IX and Final Fantasy Crisis Core are fun. I like Mario games for the nostalgia, but i don't have any systems aside from a PSP. Well, there is the Wii, but I mean...come on.

28.] Any favorite characters from video games?
Zidane, FFIX.

29.] Do you have a favorite writer?
Sir Arthur Conan Doyle maybe. I don't know, I just enjoy individual books, really.

30.] Any books you really enjoy?
Sherlock Holmes. Harry Potter.

31.] Do you draw fanart?
Now and again. Mostly I just draw whatever I feel like, which is more often than not an illustration of my own writing.

32.] Do you listen to music while you draw?
Yes. I just got a bunch of new music.

33.] Any recommended songs?
In Another Life by Vienna Teng and Sailors' Eyes by Joel Plaskett are my current favourites.

34.] Any other art websites that you really enjoy?
No.

Facebook, youtube, hotmail, xkcd.

36.] What is your dream website like?
Dear lord, I can't even begin to imagine.

37.] Do you like your own art?
The newer stuff I can like at times. The older pieces I loathe.

38.] What do you enjoy watching on television?
The Big Bang Theory, Mythbusters, Chuck, Doc Martin, I Love Lucy, Friends, Family Guy.

39.] Favorite celebrity?
Johnny Depp I guess? I kind of fell in love with Norma Talmadge having never seen any of her movies. She's gorgeous.

40.] Favorite color?
Olive green, lime green and just about every shade of purple.

41.] Favorite food?
Popcorn and pomegranate.

42.] Favorite drink?
Lemon tea. I miss it. So, so much. And unsweetened cold green tea. And milk tea. And Ramune. Oh, God...

43.] Do you like to go shopping? If yes, where? And for what?
I do. Mostly for art supplies and books. Clothing can be fun, too. And stationary is one of my biggest weaknesses- pens, pencils, papers, notebooks...I like the Creative Marketplace, Dartmouth Crossing, downtown...

44.] Can you cook?
Yes, but I don't very often. When I do it's usually pretty good, if recipeless.

45.] Any devices you use often for email? Any electronic pets?
Cell phone. No pets though...

46.] Are you tech-savvy?
NOT REALLY.

47.] Do you want to become a professional artist?
In the true sense of the word, I would yes. I mean a performer or a writer, really.

48.] Are there any other jobs you're interested in?
So, so many. Topping the list is PR, though, I suppose.

49.] Any other hobbies or skills besides drawing?
Please don't ask me to list them. There are hundreds. I'm a Jill-of-all-trades.

50.] Do you like to watch movies?
Yes. Mostly odd or old ones. I prefer plot and character to fancy effects and epicness.

51.] What's your favorite movie?
Gaslight, I suppose. Not one I can watch over and over, though.

52.] Have you ever entered an art contest, here at DeviantART or otherwise?
Yes. I got second place in a local "anime and manga" contest not too long ago, I'm ashamed to say.

53.] When did you start drawing seriously?
I still don't draw "seriously". It's just a hobby.

54.] Do you use references? If so, for what?
Yes. For anything I have trouble with.

55.] Are you a subscriber? If so, are you a beta-tester?
No.

56.] Do you have a lot of net friends?
Two. Dan and Kyle. Both of whom I've been friends with so long it wouldn't matter either way.

57.] Do you have a lot of friends that also draw?
Most of them do, to some extent. If not all of them.

58.] What time of the day do you usually go online?
I don't know. Jesus. I'm usually "here", and I hate it.

59.] Do you like to go to chat rooms?
No, not at all.

60.] Do you have your own computer?
No. I use the family computer, but everyone else has laptops or PCs, so it's basically all mine.

61.] What would you say to the person that you admire?
Probably just hello. What I always say.

62.] Does your mind wander when you draw?
It's a little ADD.

63.] Have you drawn poorly because you think too much?
I don't think so. I pretty well draw poorly all the time. It's the rare moment I draw something really good that shocks me.

64.] Do you have any friends who are professional artists?
Dan. Jack, maybe? I think? ...is he yet?

65.] Where do you often hang out?
My house, Halifax, school. I'm that cool. Yes.

66.] Are there any popular artists that you don't like much? (no need to name names if you don't want to)
Um, most of them? None of them? I don't know popular artists.

67.] Are there any situations in which you really don't like being a DeviantARTIST?
The one in which I have to try to clean up an old account that horrifies me.

68.] How about situations that make you love it?
I like that a person can get critiques on their artwork without being in a class, or paying for it. It's really a wonderful potential- that gets sorely abused.

69.] What's the one thing that makes you grateful that the internet exists?
I can talk to people I don't have the courage to phone.

70.] Is there anything out there that makes you wish the internet didn't exist?
My list of books that need to be read, the list of people I need to see.
My name is Shan, and I'm an internet addict.

71.] What's your first Deviation?
It was a crap watercolour. On this account, it's probably a piece of poetry.

72.] Any art you did prior to that?
Nothing I still really hold on to. That was a long time ago. 7 years...

73.] Has your style changed a lot since joining DeviantART?
Yes. Drastically. Mercifully.

74.] If it has changed, in what ways?
I picked up more realism an just more technique in general.

75.] Have you experienced artist's block before?
Yes. I experience it al the time.

76.] If so, how do you usually get out of it?
Turn to a different hobby, go hang out with friends. Go for a walk. Watch a movie, TV, anything.

77.] What do you do when you can't get out of it?
Wait.

78.] Any Deviants that have influenced you a lot?
No.

79.] What made you want to start drawing?
I just always have. I guess I used to show promise, some sort of unusual talent in the area. I don't really, not anymore. I didn't spend enough time honing it and I lost it.

80.] What made you want to join DeviantART?
I don't remember.

81.] Has anything ever made you want to quit DevianART?
My art, ironically.

82.] What do you think about netiquette?
It's a list of unwritten rules that people don't feel they should abide by.

83.] Have you ever been spammed or trolled?
Spammed, yes. Not trolled.

84.] Ever thought about quitting art all together?
Yes. But I couldn't. I just have no plans of working hard to improve.

85.] If so, why?
I'm not overly good at it, I grew bored with it. Then I got a ganglion cyst on my right wrist, and it started to hurt to draw at times. Now I have two, but I still draw occasionally.

86.] Do you upload high quality versions of your Deviations, or do you prefer to upload a lower quality?
I don't ever think of it.

87.] Do you have custom CSS? If so, did you make it yourself?
Don't know what a CSS is.

88.] Do you have good vision?
No- I wear glasses.

89.] If you can get anyone's autograph, whose would you get?
I don't know. What do I do with an autograph? I don't really care. If I got to meet someone I admire, great. Why would I waste the moment asking for them to scribble on a piece of paper?

90.] What would you say to that person when he or she gives you an autograph?
"Why?"

91.] Do you like to draw on Oekaki BBS?
Not really.

92.] Do you have a job?
I worked for my parents at their office, doing reconciliations and working reception.

93.] Did you take art in school? If so, did you do well? Are you still taking it?
I used to, and I did well, but I don't anymore. I take Theatre Arts. I'm better at that.

94.] Have you taken art lessons outside of a school setting?
Yes. I used to take Japanese art classes from my neighbour, Mika.

95.] Have you ever drawn something just because it was the cool thing to do?
...drawing is cool?

96.] What's your favorite phrase/quote?
"Potatoes!"

97.] Do you present yourself differently online than you do in your real life?
I don't know. I don't know how I present myself in person. I think it depends on who I'm with. I have a pretty adaptable personality, I think.

98.] What's your goal now?
...love.

99.] What do you have to say to yourself?
Get. Off. Your. Ass. And. Do. SOMETHING.

100.] Lastly, what do you have to say to everyone who read this?
